Why the Torah Is Always New
Why do we like to watch sports and read the news? Because things that are new are exciting. Old news is boring; yesterday's game is irrelevant.
But that excitement may be misplaced. The ultimate new is the Torah. Even though it was given over 3,000 years ago, the Torah teaches us to look at it every day as new — because it transcends time.
A news article gets old and a game becomes irrelevant. The Torah is forever new and forever relevant.
The more we take that to heart — and it is not easy to take to heart — the more our excitement and interest land in the right place: on things that are eternal and have value that lasts forever, instead of on things that are fleeting and disappear.
So let us reorient ourselves and recognize that Torah and mitzvos are the ultimate new, the ultimate excitement — and put our excitement there.
