The Torah's 613 Commandments

It began with Ten.

At Mount Sinai, Moses came down carrying two stone tablets — the Ten Commandments. From that moment grew the Torah's full 613 mitzvot: 248 things to do and 365 to hold back from, a way of living that touches every part of a day. Meet the ten below, catch the commandment of the day, and search all 613.

The Ten Commandments

Spoken at Sinai and carved on two tablets, the Ten Commandments are the heart from which the 613 unfold — five on the first tablet, between us and God; five on the second, between us and each other.

1I am the Lord your God
Know there is one God, who brought Israel out of Egypt.
2You shall have no other gods
Reject idols — worship God alone.
3Do not take God's name in vain
Treat God's name with reverence.
4Remember the Sabbath, keep it holy
Rest and sanctify Shabbat each week.
5Honor your father and mother
Show respect and care to your parents.
6You shall not murder
Guard the sanctity of human life.
7You shall not commit adultery
Be faithful in marriage.
8You shall not steal
Respect what belongs to others.
9You shall not bear false witness
Speak truthfully; never lie about others.
10You shall not covet
Be content; don't crave what isn't yours.
